ONE: A VELLUM ENVELOPE
A fabulous way to make mail more interesting is to use a more transparent envelope or one with a different texture. Vellum envelopes are so fun because they look different than a normal envelope, but are still able to be written on with most pens and ink. Whether the envelope is holding a simple note written in script or a bright card with a punch of color, it gives a peek into what is inside the envelope.
TWO: PATTERNED ENVELOPE LINERS
Another way to amp up average envelopes is to create fun, patterned envelope liners. Two sided patterned paper is perfect for creating the perfect liners for vellum envelopes, because the liner shows through both the inside and outside. Trim the paper with scissors and/or a paper trimmer and attach it with Tombow Mono Permanent Adhesive +. Use the bone folder to press down the adhesive and crease the paper at the fold of the envelope. This simple added step is sure to transform a simple envelope into a unique creation, full of personality.
THREE: A HANDMADE CARD
A simple, little card can be transformed with a Tombow Dual Brush Pen and a little watercolor magic. To fit the A2 envelope, measure a 4inch by 5inch rectangle of Canson XL Mix Media Paper with the paper trimmer. Then measure a 3.5 inch by 4.5 inch rectangle out of patterned paper (matching the envelope liner) and a 3 inch by 4 inch piece of Mix Media Paper, all with the paper trimmer.
Now add some pizzazz to the white mix media paper. To add a watercolor effect to the larger rectangle, color on it with a bright dual brush pen (I used color 703) in random places around the card. It doesn’t need to be perfect. Then go over the entire card with a watercolor brush and move the color around to make it look like watercolor. Add lettering to the smaller rectangle using a Dual Brush Pen and a Tombow Fudenosuke Soft Tip (or hard tip) Brush Pen. Layering the two inks on top of each other creates interest and makes the lettering look bold.
Attach the cards together with Tombow MONO Permanent Adhesive +. The rectangles can be centered on each other or lined up on one edge of the card (as pictured).
FOUR: A POP OF COLOR & A LITTLE TEXTURE
A big pop of color with black lettering accents truly creates a fun and bold look to any card or envelope. I chose to use pink to add that extra pop of color. Another great way to add a wow factor to your snail mail is to add texture. I am so obsessed with washi tape and twine and they are great additions to any card to add dimension and interest. On one side of the card wrap twine around 5 to 10 times and tie the ends into a knot. Cut the excess twine with scissors and cover the ends with a fun banner shaped piece of washi tape.
FIVE: FUN BRUSHLETTERING
Any time addresses are written in fun lettering or calligraphy it definitely adds appeal and an artistic flare to an envelope. Letters don’t have to be perfectly spaced or uniformly written to have personality. The Tombow Fudenosuke Soft Tip and Hard Tip brush pens are perfect for adding a fun calligraphed address to any envelope. The black ink really pops on the creamy vellum. Play with your style and create perfectly imperfect lettering for your next piece of snail mail.
SHARE YOUR MAIL
My favorite orders in the Renmade Calligraphy shop are envelope orders. I’m always trying to push the envelope (pun totally intended) with the goal of creating unique address designs in a simple and elegant or fun style (whatever suits my client and their event). It is also fun to send fun snail mail to my #calligrafriends . I challenge you to use one or all of the 5 tips above to create a fun and original envelope of your own! Make sure you share it with me @renmadecalligraphy on Instagram. I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Have fun!
