Hey there, lovelies! Wowie it has been crazy busy over here the past few weeks! In addition to getting back in the school routine and enjoying being a mommy to my sweet boys, I’ve been working hard behind the scenes on some super fun projects and being grateful for some really cool opportunities that I cannot wait to share soon! Hint: Several of those projects are detailed in this post! I thought I’d take a moment to fill you in on what I’ve been up to, while also telling you a little story about how I got started in my creative business. If you are looking to start your own creative business or want to learn more about what it takes to be a creative “boss lady”, stick around this post, because you will love the opportunity I have for you!
A little over a year and a half ago, my youngest son was born with a heart defect that would require open heart surgery just days after his birth. The year that followed was incredibly hard with long, worrisome days filled with a longing to get our sweet family into a new routine. Our son did amazing through the difficult time, but the year left this momma feeling drained and in need of a balance. I stumbled into calligraphy and lettering, my sweet mom bought my first pointed pen calligraphy class for me as a “just because I love you” gift and from then on I was obsessed with all things calligraphy and lettering. I had no business background and started my own little business by doing some research and talking to friends I knew that were photographers and small business owners. Cautiously, I took the leap, started sharing my artistic journey on Instagram, and have had a blast learning and growing ever sense. (PS: That was the short version of my story… want to see the whole thing?! Check out these sweet articles about how all of this renmade loveliness came about, as my sweet business was featured on Brit + Co and in my hometown’s amazing Owensboro Living Magazine, over the past few months!
WHAT I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN
There are so many things that go into starting and running a creative business. When I started this process, there was more that I didn’t know than what I knew about what I was doing and what direction I was going with my business. The most important thing that I definitely knew was that calligraphy and lettering needed to be something I did not only as a business but as a tool and outlet to encourage others. This passion has been what has driven my heart to create pieces for clients and given me a desire to share my love of lettering with others. What I didn’t know is the power that community could have on my big passion and small, budding business. Through posting my work on Instagram, I have grown from just a handful of followers to 75 K over the past year and 9 months and have been blessed with many amazing opportunities to do work for some amazing clients and big brands, while also partnering with Tombow USA as a member of their Design Team, which I absolutely love! Another great blessing has been to meet some amazing creatives which I now call some of my best friends, including Brittany Luiz who I now talk on the phone and text almost daily. Brittany and I also launched a really cool community on Facebook called the Letter Lovelies, which you should totally join! We love sharing tips and tricks and getting to know everyone in the group as friends, not followers. We are sharing so many things daily that I wish I would have known when I started! Over 1,200 members strong, there are so many friends waiting for you to share and grow with! CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE LETTER LOVELIES COMMUNITY! We can’t wait to see you over there!!!!
